Kanye West Collaborates With Adidas On New Shoe Line, Aims To Inspire Artists To Think Big
Kanye West’s new Adidas shoe, Adidas “Yeezy 750 Boost,” was unveiled today in New York during day one of New York Fashion Week! Kim Kardashian, Baby North West, Jay Z, Beyoncé, Rihanna, Diddy, Cassie, Anna Wintour and Russell Simmons all sat front row. Kylie Jenner made her modeling debut too! During the collection reveal, Kanye introduced the first song on his new album called “Wolves,” which features Sia and Vic Mensa.
On Valentine’s Day, 9,000 pairs of “Yeezy Boosts” will hit the shelves at an average retail price of $350. High quality suede, a full length internal boost and minimized construction are a few of the highlighted features.
According to elle.com, the show started with a recording from Kanye:
Adidas Boost is the industry leading technology. And I had to use the best innovation. This is Yeezy Season One.
There’s a series of people who write negative comments. They wanna joke around and say, “Why is he still trying?” If I see something, if I see an opportunity, I’m going to go for it. I’m here to crack the pavement and make new grounds, socially and in society, culturally. We’re not always in the position we want to be at. We’re constantly growing, we’re constantly making mistakes. We are constantly trying to express ourselves and actualize our dreams. I wanna create something better for you. We have been limited. It’s bigger than who I am even in this, you know, my presence, living. It’s about, when I was on earth, what did I do to help? I want people to think more, I want people to feel like it’s okay to create and follow what their dreams are, and not feel boxed in. I want people to feel like awesome is possible. There’s a lack of creativity in every field. Because people are afraid. As an artist and in this world, we can do whatever we want.
I like the line, but I also like Kanye’s creative energy behind it! He’s been toiling diligently since 2005 in attempt to pave a way for himself as a new fashion designer and product developer. Prior to collaborating with Adidas, which initiated in 2013, Kanye launched his own line called Pastelle Clothing in 2005. He also collaborated with Nike for “Air Yeezys” in 2009 and 2012, created a shoe line with Luis Vuitton in 2009, created a women’s fashion label “DW Kanye West” in 2011 as well as designed shoes for Japanese clothing brand Bape and designer Giuseppe Zanotti and more (looking forward to seeing how his label “Off White” performs). I interviewed his mentor No I.D. and he said Kanye received a great deal of mentorship as it relates to music, but had to learn much on his own in the fashion industry. It was reported that one of the models in today’s show said Kanye was very involved in the entire production, including managing and styling the apparel. All the work is paying off.
From the looks of today’s presentation, Adidas deep-rooted aesthetic and how it synergies with Kanye’s style, Kanye’s positive attitude, persistence and maturation, as well as his ability to create believers in his brand – this collaboration has the potential to flourish long-term. I’m even seeing more of my students wear Yeezus apparel, so Kanye is certainly gaining popularity across the board. He’s on the rise! Congrats, Kanye!
Update: Style.com has reported that their Kanye West X Adidas Originals article garnered a remarkable 4.7 million page views in February 2015, beating Chanel who’s normally in first place, by 1 million views. This is further evidence that Kanye West is operating at a whole new level now!
“Wearing Yeezy head-to-toe” said Kim today before the fashion show! I’d rock it!
