FACE TYPE 1: SQUARE | KATIE HOLMES

Face Type 1 – Square: Square shaped faces are equal in length and width, have a prominent jaw line, square chin and broad forehead.  Katie Holmes is a perfect example.  If you share similar facial features you want to choose shades that will soften the angularity of your face.  So look for frames with rounded edges and delicate contouring for balance.

FACE TYPE 2: ROUND | KRISTEN DUNST

Face Type 2 – Round:  Round faces have few angles, full cheeks and a subtle chin.  Kirsten Dunst is a prime example.  To add definition, choose sunglasses with distinctive brow lines and details at the temple.  The sharp angles will balance the roundness of your face.  Wide frames that extend beyond the cheekbones will sleeken your round cheeks as well.

FACE TYPE 3: HEART | SCARLETT JOHANSSON

Face Type 3 – Heart: Your features consist of high cheekbones, a broad forehead and pointed chin – think Scarlett Johansson.  Avoid details along the brow line; we want to draw the attention to the lower half of your face to balance out your narrow chin.  Teardrop aviator sunglasses do just that!  Their design pulls the attention from top to bottom, adding width to the lower half of your face.

FACE TYPE 4: LONG | NICKY HILTON

Face Type 4 – Long: Simply put, your face is longer than it is wide, similar to Nicky Hilton.  So, it’s important that you choose wide frames to counterbalance the length of your face.  Most other frame types will only exaggerate the linearity of your face.  So, stick with frames that are wider than the broadest part of your visage.

FACE TYPE 5: OVAL | BEYONCÉ

Trend 5 – Oval:  Ovals have the luxury of being able to pull off any type of frame because you have balanced proportions. Though you can experiment with a variety of sunglasses, keep in mind that people with oval faces usually have smaller features.  Therefore you want to select frames that won’t overwhelm your face, like Beyoncé!

I was eager to see how designers and celebrities would infuse punk culture into their looks. They nailed it! Studs, bold textures on gowns, fishnet stockings, wild hair, dramatic headpieces, eye-catching silhouettes and vivid colors all graced the red carpet with plenty of paparazzi to capture the fleeting moments!

Wearing a hot pink floral Chanel gown, the event was hosted by the queen of fashion, Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour. Beyoncé and Givenchy’s Riccardo Tisci, who escorted Rooney Mara, co-chaired the event. Mara wore a white lace gown with exaggerated shoulders, striking front zipper and train, while Beyoncé opted for a more daring look with a flame motif dress, matching knee high boots and long gloves – both by Givenchy’s Riccardo Tisci. He also designed Kim Kardashian’s floral print dress, which was a bold choice for any woman, especially one who is pregnant! While I think the print choice could have been more flattering, I give her an A+ for stepping outside of her comfort zone and trying something unexpected, especially with all of the media attention on her less than flattering fashion choices lately!

Sarah Jessica Parker went all out in an oversized mohawk headpiece by Philip Treacy and a voluminous dress by Giles Deacon. This was the most dramatic look of the evening. Nicole Richie also stunned the crowd, channeling the punk rock culture with gray hair, which I thought was a brilliant way to express her personal style through the theme while supporting the cause! Another major hair moment came from Anne Hathaway, who colored her tresses blonde just for the event! What took her so long? She looks amazing with blonde locks and her burned-out Valentino gown made the perfect combination!

With so much eye candy I’ve gathered my top 25 list of Met gala looks – it’s one of the best years yet! Which looks tickle your fancy?

Trend 1 – Sequin Bodices and Tulle Skirts: Beads and sequins create rich dimensional shine and bling on the fitted sweet heart bodices of strapless frocks.  Pouffy tulle skirts are tempered with wide, satin sashes for girlie girl appeal.  My favorite element, you can move and dance all night in a dress like this!  Also keep in mind this silhouette is perfect for pear shapes as the emphasis is on top, drawing the attention to the upper body while the voluminous skirt helps conceal a fuller lower half.

Fire, Soprano, Soprano | Prom 2013

Trend 2 – Ombré Effects:  All eyes will be on you as you glide through the dance floor in an ombre dress.  Pleated panels crisscrossing fitted bodices, rhinestone-buckled single shoulders and dazzling, bead encrusted waists gleam against artfully pleated jewel-hued ombre chiffon gowns this season.

Trend 3 – Peplum: Sumptuous lace, daring cut outs and fin-like peplums fashion the ultrafemme body-con form of slinky peplum dresses.   If you have an athletic build and are looking to create an hourglass silhouette choose peplum!  Plus you’ll get to show off your long, lean legs!

Trend 4 – Hi-Low Dresses:  Can’t decide whether you want to go short or full length for prom?  A high low dress is the perfect solution!  Clusters of shimmering sequins and vivid impressionistic prints bedeck lace overlays of strapless minidresses and cascading layers of floating chiffon creating rippling high-low skirts for every girls delight.

Trend 5 – Mermaid Drop Waists: Bandage-style bodices, sweet heart and mesh necklines sculpt the contoured silhouettes of glamorous gowns featuring dropped waists and floor-sweeping sheer skirts.  Remember how spectacular Jennifer Lawrence looked in her Dior Couture drop waist gown at the Oscars this year?  Channel her allure this year for prom!

Trend 6 – All Over Sequin: Glossy sequins coat floor-grazing gowns; some dense at the bodice and more sparingly near raw edge hems and others fully covering striking strapless dresses.  Looking for drama at every camera angle?  Go for stunning side slits!

Trend 7 – Mesh Necklines: Sheer and embellished mesh yokes set the tone for flirty skater dresses, knotted waistlines and column gowns with on-trend back cutouts, metallic-dot patterns and floor-sweeping hemlines.  These are also called illusion dresses.

Trend 8 – Black and White:  Satiny crisscrosses, edgy faux leather, and sequin stripes texture the versatile bodices of party-ready dresses with ethereal chiffon skirts and floating hems.  Monochrome is the number one trend across the board this year, and prom dress trends are following suit!

Trend 9 – One Shoulder Dresses: Sequin one-shoulder straps, angel sleeves and pleated single straps lead into slimming bodices with sweet heart necklines, soft, fluttering hems and figure accentuating skirts.

Trend 10: Printed Dresses:  Plunging V-necks, strapless styles and rounded necklines grace metallic-embossed chiffon gowns, vivacious sequin zigzags and floral bouquet prints all with flirty fits.  Statement making embellished prints create dramatic, contrasting finishes and rebel against traditional coats of sparkle for prom.  Be bold this prom!

With style, intelligence and grace, Michelle Obama manages to be a supportive wife, loving mother and active First Lady.  Her personal style makes it easy for women of all walks of life to relate to her.  Sophisticated A-line and pencil skirts, prim cardigans, energetic tones, youthful prints and astonishing ball gowns – Michelle Obama looks great in it all, and you can too!

Plus, her keen interest and support of American classics like J. Crew and New York based designers like Jason Wu helps inspire new talent and innovative design in the States.  Jason Wu designed Michelle Obama’s first and second inaugural dresses.  Maria Pinto of Chicago is another designer Michelle Obama has supported.  Since joining Barack Obama on the campaign trail in 2008, Michelle Obama has been crowned a fashion icon, and she earned it fair and square.

TREND 1: BLACK & WHITE

Happy florals and Easter worthy hues are taking a back seat this spring.  Designers are delivering a variety of intense blacks and whites and it’s working!  Black and white on a single garment with geometric patterns, black trimmings and side panels on white tops, black sports bras under white jackets are all prominent examples.  Though we’ll still see some florals and colorful tones, the emphasis this season is ‘monochrome.’

TREND 2: PEEKABOO PIECES

A little skin is always in!  Caged plunging V necklines, diamond cutouts, slits from waist to thigh and gently exposed waists are stirring up excitement!  To subdue the sex appeal, designers are incorporating the trend into looser fitting dresses and tops, boyfriend blazers, relaxed pants, and pleated skirts for balance.

TREND 3: BRILLIANT BEADING

The sun won’t be the only thing radiating this spring!  Regal jewels are adding sparkle to dresses, tops, skirts and accessories with influences from India to Russia.  My favorite: beading along the neckline.  It’s a ravishing alternative to necklaces.  Keep in mind it’s best to avoid jewelry (aside from earrings) when wearing beaded garments.  If you do, you stand the chance of overpowering existing embellishments (and looking like a decorated tree, of course

TREND 4: SHORT SUITS

Teaming prim and polished blazers with easy breezy shorts is the ultimate way to rebel against conventional pants for work and play this spring.  While blazers come in a variety of cuts and fabrics including cropped, boyfriend, collarless, and sheer sleeves; the shorts are generally more consistent.  Since shorts by nature are more relaxed, and ‘shorts suits’ are intended to be refined, there is little room to play in terms of the design of shorts.  Notice they are structured, slightly higher than mid thigh, looser fitting and have either a mid rise or high waist.  The goal is to pair the blazer with shorts that are sophisticated, in other words worthy enough to be paired with a civil blazer.

TREND 5: BLUE DENIM

Colored denim stole the show and now the traditional ‘blue hue’ is back with a vengeance!  Light wash denim button downs under dark wash denim blazers, metallic effects on denim dresses, denim patchwork and paneling on Bermuda shorts and even floral printed skirts teamed with two-tone denim tops describe the plethora of options available to denim lovers this spring!

TREND 6: LUXE LEATHER

No need to put that leather skirt in the back of your closet, it’s got unfinished business.  This spring expect to see not only leather pants, but vibrant leather skirts, dresses and also leather bodices mingled with sheer foundations.  While I’m excited that leather will be sticking around this season it’s important to remember this: avoid layering leather.  If you’re going to wear a leather dress opt for a silk or cotton cover up.  Skimp out on your spring leather jacket; wear one leather piece at a time.  This will ensure your look remains ‘springy’ and chic.

TREND 7: BOLD STRIPES

Investing in stripes, whether it be a funky suit, fabulous frock or fitted top, means you get a double bonus: they are both trendy and classic.  Maintaining their relevance from season to season and year after year, infusing stripes in your wardrobe is like adding shares of Google stock to your portfolio!  You can be confident that its style value will be strong and consistent.

TREND 8: DIGITAL PRINTS

Prints in general have risen to a whole new level this season.  Imagine an ocean filled with 100 swimmers toting surfboards and tanners toasting on the sand.  Now imagine that image printed on a surprisingly gorgeous dress!  It’s real; the fashion industry is pushing the limits!  And if you’re a daredevil too you should give digital prints a try this spring!

TREND 9: LOVELY LACE

Effortlessly romantic and attention grabbing, a lace piece is more than worth adding to your spring shopping list.  Lace panel details on pants from waist to hem, lace bodices on dresses, contrasting asymmetrical lace cutouts at the waist, and mixed lace patterns on one garment are sure to distract a lot of guys this season!  A lace camisole paired with a buttoned blazer and fitted pencil skirt is a safe way to wear this trend at the office (I know you want to

TREND 10: STATEMENT SUNGLASSES

Looking to add runway appeal to your daily style? Get yourself a pair of oversized, colorfully trimmed sunglasses!  Loud and proud shades were all over catwalks – take a cue from Diane Von Furstenberg, Dries Von Noten, and Phillip Lim.   Be daring this spring!

A shimmering gold strapless blush gown by Giorgio Armani and vintage Harry Winston diamonds looked ravishing on the Best Actress Nominee, Jessica Chastain

The Dior muse, Charlize Theron, stayed loyal choosing a white strapless gown from the house’s haute couture collection and Harry Winston jewels to complement her edgy pixie cut

 It was a stunning silver sequin Armani Privé gown with a cutout detail at the shoulder and Jimmy Choo shoes for Naomi Watts, Best Actress Nominee

Best Supporting Actress winner Anne Hathaway opted for a pale pink satin Prada column gown and Tiffany and Co. jewels for her big night!

 Amy Adams chose a pale blue Oscar de la Renta gown with a full skirt, descending chiffon pleats and a long train

 ’Fashion Police’ starlet Kelly Osbourne sparkled in a Tony Ward Couture full length gown featuring a waterfall of beads and asymmetrical straps.  She chose jewelry by Norman Silverman, De Marco and Le Vian

The red carpet welcomed Reese Witherspoon who looked breathtaking in a cobalt blue Luis Vuitton strapless gown and gorgeous side swept locks (best hair of the evening!)

Judging from the collections, this fall will be an unprecedented time to express your personality through fashion.  The silhouettes are flattering and versatile, the prints are full of spark, the dominating colors are lively and complement most skin tones, and the overarching fashion mood is fresh!  As you are about to see, innovation drives the design concepts for fall and we have a lot to look forward to!  I’ve compiled a list of my favorites so you can decide for yourself!  Are you ready?  Let’s GO!

TREND 1: HOUNDSTOOTH

Michael Kors Fall/Winter 2013-20114 | This houndstooth shawl neckline cardigan looks stunning atop this black turtleneck dress!  It’s accessorized with a black leather waist belt, leather gloves, flap briefcase, white and black color blocked closed toe ankle strap heels and aviators.

Tommy Hilfiger Fall/Winter 2013-20114 | I like Tommy Hilfiger’s American spin on this houndstooth car coat.  The red, white and blue coloring create a refreshing spin on the standard black and white houndstooth hue, and the furry finish feminizes the silhouette of the coat.

Michael Kors Fall/Winter 2013-20114 | Looks like a houndstooth onesie, but the mod cut of the pant and top, the universally flattering tone teamed with these toe dipped pointy heels makes the look work!

Tommy Hilfiger Fall/Winter 2013-20114 | Small houndstooth detailing decorate this prim collar top, milky tone and turtleneck.

Tommy Hilfiger Fall/Winter 2013-20114 | A sporty pleated drop waist dress features all over houndstooth and red trimming to match the lapels and cuffs of this tan trench.  I would definitely wear this!

TREND 2: FUR

Dennis Basso Fall/Winter 2013-20114 | First we have a brown multi-tone ribbed fur coat, a navy blue jacket with an oversized fur collar, fur sleeves and crocodile body paired with navy suede pants.  Underneath it all, a delicate satin blouse.  Gorgeous!

Diane Von Furstenberg Fall/Winter 2013-20114 | Diane Von Furstenberg featured my favorite collection for F/W 13.  She mixed a variety of prints, textures and colors to spice up traditional ready to wear pieces.  Here she uses an oversized fur collar to add drama to a gorgeous cognac and royal blue color blocked coat, which glides against the busy patterns masterfully!

Jason Wu Fall/Winter 2013-20114 | Innovative!  Check out how Jason Wu incorporates fur below the waist on this military and Karl Lagerfeld inspired jacket.  The open toe lace up booties are a genius choice because they mimic the ‘up to there’ closures at the neckline while providing some much needed looseness at the toe.

Michael Kors Fall/Winter 2013-20114 | Royal!  Where do I begin?  The expertly designed off the shoulder + V neck fur jacket seductively exposes the chest and collar bone.  This high slit exposes yet another tantalizing part of our body.  The flattering cut of this look is versatile enough to look good on women of all shapes and sizes!

Dennis Basso Fall/Winter 2013-20114 | Regal!  This ensemble features a ribbed fur cape, sheer top and shimmery silver trousers, oh la la!

TREND 3: COLOR-BLOCKING

Diane Von Furstenberg Fall/Winter 2013-20114 | Love color blocking?  Check out this lustrous pink suit with a textured collar blouse and strappy heels.  Love!

Altuzarra Fall/Winter 2013-20114 | Illusion dresses are everywhere!  This one has an eagle aura, the bodice is reminiscent of wings.

Carolina Herrera Fall/Winter 2013-20114 | I like the Spanish inspired silhouette of this look.  The exaggerated rounded sleeves, high waisted mermaid skirt and even the spicy tones create a flavorful combination!

Diane Von Furstenberg Fall/Winter 2013-20114 | I was shocked by this one, in fact it’s one of my favorites.  Metallics, color blocking, a high waisted pencil skirt with a tummy slimming panel, the smooth and chocolatey unbuttoned blouse, caged heels and so much more!  Must have!

TREND 4: SHEER

Christian Siriano Fall/Winter 2013-20114 | Angelic and provocative, this sheer floor length embellished dress leaves only a little to the imagination.  Come-hither bad boy!

Naeem Khan Fall/Winter 2013-20114 | This elegant dress features an exposed back, sheer gathering, exquisite stud detailing and dainty neck bow.

Diane Von Furstenberg Fall/Winter 2013-20114 | Mingling casual chic and evening wear, a cobalt blue deep V neck dress with sheer sleeves such as this can also be dressed down with black leather boots for less formal occassions.

Rodarte Fall/Winter 2013-20114 | A sheer back panel is used to accent wing embroidery and a ‘sexy back’ on this intoxicating number.

Jason Wu Fall/Winter 2013-20114 | What a striking photo!  And the dress is equally stunning.  I like the fluid movement of the pleated skirt due to the chiffon fabric.  And look at how the diamond cut at the chest is gracefully curtained by the sheer overlay.

TREND 5: PEPLUM

Zac Posen Fall/Winter 2013-20114 | Peplum, peplum, peplum!  We can’t get enough!  This one is unique because the peplum detail at the midsection resembles a bow and contrasts beautifully with the neckline and mermaid hemline.  Decadent!

Michael Kors Fall/Winter 2013-20114 | Polished black trimming along the top and skirt plus color blocked heels make this simple silhouette pop!

Michael Kors Fall/Winter 2013-20114 | Ooooh!  This one is special because the leather peplum detail sprouts from the sides rather than the center for edge.  Plus the cross zipper detail is hard hitting!

Michael Kors Fall/Winter 2013-20114 | Wow!  Another refreshing take on peplum, a train!  It also pulls inspiration from the hi low trend seen on just about everyone!

Michael Kors Fall/Winter 2013-20114 | Here it is again, peplum accents swinging from the sides!  This time it decorates a corset bodice with a sweetheart neckline, buckle waist belt and heels and a stretchy knee length skirt.

TREND 6: FEMININE PRINTS

Diane Von Furstenberg Fall/Winter 2013-20114 | Ravishing!  Confetti and geometric prints shower this keyhole wrap waist dress and electrify the runway!

Victoria, Victoria Beckham Fall/Winter 2013-20114 | The profile print on this blouse is clever!  Simple yet impactful, just like Victoria Beckham.

Diane Von Furstenberg Fall/Winter 2013-20114 | The pink parallel trimming and exotic print of this dress make it unforgettable!

Tory Burch Fall/Winter 2013-20114 | Noticing a lot of high necklines?  Me too!  I’m happy we’ve moved past tie neck blouses, for now at least.  The print on this top is reflected in the teal leather high waisted skirt with a front slit.  The black pendant on her necklace ties in beautifully with the dark tights, purse and shoes.  Excellent outfit for the office during fall and winter.

Vera Vang Fall/Winter 2013-20114 | I’ve never really been a fan of florals, but this works!  The slim cropped pants, airy cape blouse and rich coloring modernizes the floral print.

TREND 7: PARTY PANTS

Prabal Gurung Fall/Winter 2013-20114 | Horizontal, vertical and asymmetrical gold stitching amplify the glam factor of these skinny pants and the gold heels make the perfect finish!

Diane Von Furstenberg Fall/Winter 2013-20114 | Drop the trimmings and go all out!  These golden beauties are at the forefront of leafy adornments on a sheer blouse and scarf plus an incredible leather trench with red lapels and a daring print.

Diane Von Furstenberg Fall/Winter 2013-20114 | The leopard print works because it is tamed by the neutral coloring and varied with ombre effect, you see how the print is smaller on the top and larger at the bottom.  It’s really easy on the eye, which makes room for a metallic alligator blazer and oversized hobo.

Diane Von Furstenberg Fall/Winter 2013-20114 | Cream and black are succulent hues for this look, the print almost looks like cherries.  This design, however, induces the same mouth watering appeal with sophistication.

Diane Von Furstenberg Fall/Winter 2013-20114 | Fish scales inspire this head to toe textured look and I love it!  DVF brilliantly uses prints to breathe new life and add more dimension to fashion this year.  Two thumbs up!!

The temperatures are destined to be cool and so is your style!  So let’s dash in to my top ten must have winter staples to heat up your wardrobe and confidence all season long!

WINTER MUST HAVE 1: FAUX FUR VEST

Kourtney Kardashian uses a fiery faux fur vest to add spice to an all black ensemble.  The prim look craves a tough girl touch so she cleverly added a rugged tote.  Try this look!

A brown faux fur vest glamorizes Rachel Zoe’s boho knit hat and shades.  So if you like to mingle casual and luxe this is a superb example.

Kim Kardashian winterizes her look with a lustrous black faux fur vest and her signature finish: thigh high black leather boots.

WINTER MUST HAVE 2: LEATHER PANTS

Beyoncé’s entire look is staggering!  Curly locks, a red blazer with black detailing, swerve heeled hardware anklet sandals, a printed oversized clutch, futuristic shades and finally…curve embracing black leather pants!  Leather pants aren’t just for skinny women!

Olivia Wilde knows her strength: magnetizing eyes and chiseled bone structure.  So in the fashion department she chooses subtle tones and simple silhouettes to keep the focus right where she wants it.  The lace up detailing along the sides of her leather pants is an understated way to add flare.

Kristen Stewart and Beyoncé must have been channeling the same fashion vibration!  Who would’ve thought!  This is by far the best look I’ve seen on Kristen.  Watch out Beyoncé, someone may be ‘biting’ your style, get it hehe!

WINTER MUST HAVE 3: MODERN OVERSIZED SCARF

A grey check cashmere scarf trimmed with fringe and a faux fur hat adds a rich emphasis to Molly King’s tan full length coat and black platform booties.

Love houndstooth?  Me too!  Feast your eyes on Danni Dminogue’s magnified version of the beloved print decking out her chichi chiffon oversized scarf, POW!  It pairs perfectly with her studded flats.  Try it for yourself!

And for a whimsical spin notice how Milla Jovovich uses two chunky scarves, one wrapped around her neck then placed underneath her cardigan (albeit wrapped inside a waist belt), and the other tied at the neckline and skillfully tucked underneath.  This is a great way to layer for warmth without a gigantic coat.

WINTER MUST HAVE 4: EYE-CATCHING BLAZER

Guliana Rancic is wearing a neon yellow blazer, delicate cream scoop neck top, leather leggings and metal tip pumps…plus, most importantly, one big, confident smile!

Here Blake Lively is spotted wearing a tribal print blazer with satin cuffs and a pointed asymmetrical hem.  Aztec prints, alone, are attention grabbing, no other prints required, so stick with solid separates.

Music artist turned design maven Gwen Stefani is sporting a color blocked menswear inspired blazer with classic tuxedo details and a splash of color for a feminine twist!  Leather leggings and ankle boots give the look edge and sex appeal.  This is how to look like a lady in menswear-esque pieces!

WINTER MUST HAVE 5: SEE THROUGH SEPARATES

Kourtney Kardashian, one of my style favorites, is wearing emerald leather high waisted shorts, a sheer V neck button down blouse and tights with leather booties and an oversized satchel.  Sheer tops are surprising rebellious during winter months!  They’re an enticing way to say, ‘Hey winter, you won’t burry me under layers the whole season. Check out my goodies!”

Same applies here with see through separates.  Miranda Kerr is wearing a sheer, loose fitting cropped top, a denim button down top, low rise leather shorts and tights, a bell silhouette coat and an unexpected western twist with cowgirl boots!  I love it!

Jaime King looks mesmerizing in this long sleeve sheer top with an edgy leather strip starting at her collarless neckline all the way to the hem.  The cardigan she’s cradling brilliantly matches the color scheme of her overall look!  The tangerine clutch and aqua insole of her heels breaks up the continuity of the royal blue.  She aced it!

WINTER MUST HAVE 6: COZY CARDIGAN

Blowing in the wind, Eva Longoria is wearing a pink full length woven cardigan, a matching tank and glossy nude pumps with distressed skinnies and a Birkin bag.

Taylor Swift is spotlighted wearing a mustard boyfriend cardigan, maroon top, vintage polka dot skinny jeans, pearls AND LOOK…did you notice yet?  Her flats resemble kittens!  Isn’t that adorable!

With red lips, a ‘kiss me’ cardigan, white top, liquid leather pants, mellow boots, a leather duffle bag, oversized gradient cat eye sunglasses and her hair pulled back, Miranda Kerr proves sporty can be sexy!

WINTER MUST HAVE 7: VIBRANT LEATHER JACKET

Elisabetta Canalis’s leather moto jacket combines purple sleeves with diamond patch stitching at the shoulder, blue and black color blocking on the body, a front asymmetrical zipper and a below the waist belt.  Leather jackets infused with color elevate our cool weather outfits!

Nicole Ritchie appears to agree!  Her vibrant leather jacket is strikingly similar to Elisabetta’s, except this one is military inspired (notice the epaulets and collar).  See how a vivid leather jacket and a lightweight, printed scull scarf can spruce up even yoga pants and a basic tee?   Add a fringe backpack for even more get up and go spunk.

Imagine Erin Andrew’s outfit without this tangy jacket.  Cute, but the jacket goes the extra mile finishing the look with energy!

WINTER MUST HAVE 8: EFFORTLESSLY CHIC PONCHO

This is the best picture I’ve seen of Jessica Simpson!  Her brown woven turtleneck poncho is elegant, modern and cozy yet light weight.  The textured faux fur trimmed gloves, leopard print satchel and oversized shades give the overall look sophistication.

Halle Berry’s cowl neck poncho pairs effortlessly with distressed jeans, a white tee and buckle boots.  I especially like the clingy fit and triangle hem, it makes the poncho appear less dense.

With a gorgeous layered bob and pink highlights whisking in the wind, Fearne Cotton looks smashing in a plush cape poncho with zig zag fabrication at the asymmetrical hem.  The purse choice works because it pops without stealing attention away from the main attraction (the poncho).

WINTER MUST HAVE 9: STATEMENT PURSE

Our purses should do the talking at times, however!  Check out Jennifer Lawrence carrying this exquisitely designed front flap tote with gold hardware along the flap and strap.  Notice she isn’t wearing any gold accessories, that would be overkill.  When you’re wearing a purse with lots of metal detailing avoid overpowering accessories.  Choose subtle accessories instead.

Same rule applies for bags with color.  Jennifer Mitchell’s ostrich convertible bag is the only blue element of her look.  That ensures her purse (and red lip) the center of attraction!

Hillary Duff uses a gentle forest green tote to liven up her cool weather combination.

WINTER MUST HAVE 10: STUNNING BOOTS

Wowza!  Gossip Girl’s Taylor Momsen looks like she’s strutting for the cover of Glamour Magazine!  Let’s focus our attention on the boots.  She’s wearing grey leather thigh highs with cowgirl pull straps which look vivacious with fishnet tights.  The length, style and silhouette of her plaid wool coat plus double layers underneath keep the look classy.

Colored jeans are all the rave and Petra Ecclestone teams hers with black leather knee high fold over boots.  Gold bangles complement the dominant yellow hue, and her sheer top adds an ‘extra’ordinary touch.

Lay your eyes on Jennifer Hudson’s sassy pose and Versace ensemble!  She looks ravishing, it’s like she’s beaming from the inside out.  Now zoom in on the boots!  I’m instantly taken by the silver strap across the shaft and the heel is shocking!  I’ve got a closer look for you in the photo below…

BAM!  These Versace boots are unprecedented.  The gold inverted triangle ingrained heel is killer!  Have at least one pair of head turning boots in your closet, take it from Jennifer!

Bonjour mes amis!  I’ve got chichi tips on how to choose the best coat for your body plus a spectacular live fashion show just for you!  Winter months are entirely too long to settle for a coat that is less than flattering.  With the following tips you’ll know exactly what details to look for to make the best coat purchase and look good all season long!

BODY-TYPE 1: PEAR SHAPE (KAORI – FAR LEFT)

ALL OVER SEQUIN DRESSES

Beyonce radiates in a gold all over sequin wrap dress and sparkly peep toe platforms.

This silver sequin fringe hemline dress has uber sex appeal, go Taylor!  And I like how she chose gold peep toe pumps rather than silver, smart way to mix and match the two.

Slightly more structured, this Fendi strapless peplum detail dress is futuristically stunning!

DAZZLING SKIRTS

Ok I’ve got three skirt picks from Kourtney Kardashian, this floor length beauty pairs elegantly with a metallic tank and edgy waist belt – try it!

Polka dots, anyone?  What a playful touch to a billowy skirt, sheer blouse and goth inspired lace ups.  I’m in!

Kourtney takes those same lace up heels and drops the polka accents for solid opaque tights, a gold sequin skirt and a subtle long sleeve top.  Very appropriate for the holiday season plus neutral makeup ensures the attention is where it should be, the skirt!

PICTURE PERFECT PANTS

Here’s an excellent way to wear Christmas colors with style.  The green turtle neck teams effortlessly with red embellished skinny pants and a dark outerwear accent.  Brilliant!

Jessica Alba is one of the most stylish celebrities of today, my jaw drops when I discover her in unexpected pieces like this!  My favorite – this charming black sequin tie and peter pan collar.  Feminine printed pants, a fitted sweater and orange and cream tipped pumps balance the menswear undertone of this look.  Genius!

It’s going to be cold in most places anyway, take a cue from Anja Rubik and let your focal point be a statement coat!  I like the textured fur appeal and wine leather detailing at the closure and cuffs.  Plus if your legs are your best asset, black high waist ankle skinnies will make sure they get some much deserved attention for the night!

DEMURE JUMPSUITS

Draped, asymmetrical and candy coated, Kate Beckinsdale’s jumpsuit deserves a trophy!  Enough said.

And Sanaa Lathan’s jumpsuit is very figure flattering.  It features a deep V neck, wrap empire waist, off center sash and an elegant wide leg perfect for women with curves!

John Legend’s girlfriend, Chrissy Teigen, is wearing a striking red jumpsuit cinched in with a nude waist belt.  We can’t see the shoes but albeit they’re just as entrancing

EYE-CATCHING MINIS

Here she goes again in this turquoise leather strap key hole cut out dress, black tights, black leather boots, textured clutch and red lips to match her mani – style goddess!

Rihanna’s red scoop neck dress is sexy because its shape is so simple and the fabric is light.  This is a clever and understated way to flaunt a toned figure.

And of course, Victoria Secret’s Miranda Kerr looks tantalizing in this textured dress with an extremely plunged neckline.  The sharp shoulders, mesh peep toes and studded clutch add a shot of edge.

It’s always fascinating to see the way fashion designers cleverly use dark against light to celebrate our curves.  Constantly reworking the yin and yang of these two dominant hues, creative minds discover a plethora of design concepts to make us look like goddesses.  Imagine a fitted black dress with a white figure eight panel placed at the center.  This will make you appear more curvaceous.  Now turn that white panel into a vertical line, and suddenly you appear less curvaceous.  Stark contrasts of black and white can either accentuate or minimize curves, and in fact, it’s the most powerful way to do so.

Variations of the look include curve hugging silhouettes with sharp angles and wavy contours, bateau and plunging necklines, pleated and fitted hemlines, elasticized and cinched in waists and more!  If you like to show off your curves choose dresses made of stretch jersey or cashmere.  If you like softer looks that graze over your figure opt for silk instead.

All skin tones, ranging from porcelain to deep brown, look smashing in black and white!  Pair the look with your favorite shade of red lipstick and all eyes are on you!  And since the style statement is in the garment there is no need to over think accessories, keep it simple just like these celebrities!

Jessica Alba stuns the room in a black and white color block mirror effect dress, quilted clutch and platform peep toe pumps.

Kim Kardashian is wearing a long sleeve black and white color block dress that flares from the waistline and features an elongating black panel down the center along with black knee high boots finished with a sophisticated tote.

Curve hugging color blocks add a seductive contrast to Alicia Key’s stretchy  sheath dress.  She teams the dress with sharp cut black and white blocked platform pumps and an understated clutch.

I was invited to speak to students of my alma mater, Columbia College Chicago, about career, fashion and business.  We had a blast!  I shared my career experience in television broadcast and online publishing and provided advice on how to turn their dreams into reality.  We discussed how to add value in the world through specialized knowledge, how to convert knowledge into power through definite plans, how to be flexible in times of change, how to identify and manage internal and external core values and more.

This was such a rewarding experience.  I feel fortunate to have had an opportunity to add value to the students’ lives.  Every thought has a vibration that affects the world.  Looking at the smiles on the students’ faces I believe I sewed powerful seeds of thought.

I LOVE these pants!   Victoria Secret model Miranda Kerr was spotted wearing cropped A.L.C. trousers with a distinctive black stripe down the side of the leg, which spotlighted the trend.  She topped off the look with a loose fitting sleeveless patch pocket top by Equipment, Manolo Blahnik pointy toe pumps and a black oversized tote.

The cut and design of these chinos work for practically every body type.  Vertical stripes deceive the eye and give the illusion of longer, leaner legs.  Rather than focusing on hips and thighs, the eye follows a straight, vivid line from hip to ankle.  Cropped pants are designed to show more leg than fabric at the hemline.  Showing more natural leg will make them appear longer.  So ultimately this trend packs the power of two ingenious tricks to flatter your body, particularly your lower half.

Since stripes have an innately sporty vibe this trend works best when teamed with casual separates.  That’s why Miranda chose to wear a loose fitting, barely buttoned top for an easy breezy elegance.  For cooler temps wear side-stripe pants with a fitted turtle neck or a long sleeve patch pocket chiffon top to give the look movement like Miranda.

You can have on an amazing outfit underneath the layers – but your coat is the first thing people see!  So it’s important to invest in outwear that is both modern and figure flattering.  Considering what length, collar, shape, color and details to look for may have you hesitating to venture past the grey pea coat you’ve wanted to burn for the last three years!  This year, though, it’s time for a change and I have tips tailored to you.  I’m taking inspiration from the global starlet Taylor Swift who was recently seen in this mouth watering manteau waving to her adorers.  After our chat today you’ll know exactly what to look for before heading to the fitting room (and thank goodness the checkout line too)!  Let’s get started, shall we?!

IF YOU’RE PETITE…

• Go For: Lengths that extend further than your hips to add length to your body.  Bias cut coats that extend below your hips and have an all over pattern will obscure a shorter torso.
• Avoid: Cropped coats, as they will make you appear shorter!

Romantic, timeless and on trend, this all over lace trench coat is the sexiest coat of the season!  Not surprising, it’s a member of the Kardashian Collection at Dorthy Perkins.  So if you want to rebel against winter’s typical trench with a steamy lace design, I highly recommend this ethereal piece.

Tomboyish and chic, this red hooded coat is perfect if you’re like the sporty girl who curls her eyelashes on the train!  A fashion chameleon, like Taylor Swift!  The upper body ruching, solid palette, and mellow wrap belt pairs well with laid back jeggings, an oversized sweater and lace up boots.

If you love perky houndstooth this one is for you!  We’re seeing lots of peter pan collars lately, and the trend is transitioning into coats.  In addition to the collar, the oversized pockets at the hip and rounded shoulders give this coat a funky retro vibe.  I recommend wearing it with a pink mini skirt, white top and patent leather pumps.

IF YOU’RE BUSTY…

• Go For: Mingle style and function with high necklines that conceal larger bosoms.  Be sure the fit is snug but not suffocating.  Vertical details and longer coats will draw the eye down your body rather than across.
• Avoid: Pockets at the bust as they add additional volume.  Also, opt for coats without lapels to minimize your chest.  Stay away from waist belts as they cinch in your middle and accent cleavage.

I love funnel necks because they double as scarves!  Any extra help in keeping my neck warm is an added bonus!  This red military funnel coat is straight and narrow, no bull.  It features a gentle A-line cut, silver trim buttons, epaulettes, and detailing at the wrist.  Pow!

This charcoal sparkle boucle coat reminds me of a dress!  It’s defined waist, zip front, PU trimming and colorless form channels innerwear aesthetic for outerwear style.

Opulent and rugged all at once, this 100% sheepskin coat is made for the woman who embodies high style and earthy edge.  The texture, standup collar and off-center, eclipsed closure enhances its flare.

• Go For: Structured at the top and skirted at the bottom to provide coverage and movement for your fuller hips.  Belted coats will help balance your proportions by defining your waistline, highlighting a strategically chiseled top and voluminous bottom.
• Avoid: Cropped coats, they will exaggerate your hips and thighs.  And remember, it’s best to avoid shapes that cling to your largest measurements.

The perfect princess, are you?  This Jil Sander wool blend coat is a quintessential investment piece if you like to keep your look prim and proper.  The satin bow detailing gives this coat a youthful spin, and the skirted silhouette provides movement to keep the look fresh.  I recommend wearing it with a fitted, color-blocked sheath dress and sky-high pumps to stand as tall as your standards!

When I saw this tan military coat my heart skipped a beat!  It’s so crisp, light and intricately detailed.  Blending tough and sweet, the structure at the top is juxtaposed against a billowy, free spirited pleated bottom.  Pair it with a vibrant tunic, slim cut light wash jeans, a safari bag and nude platform pumps, for example.

Layered ruffles, subtle checks and sharp hemline make this a memorable, low-key coat.  Ideal for a woman who appreciates detail without the all the gaudiness.

IF YOU HAVE BROAD SHOULDERS…

• Go For: Fur trimming along the neckline to soften your shoulders.  Keep in mind coats featuring contoured shoulders will mask sharp edges.
• Avoid: Structured details at the curve of your shoulders like military epaulettes as they will stiffen rather than flatter your athletic upper body.

I wasn’t a big fan of puffer coats until I saw this one.  I love it because it’s not overly voluminous.  Let’s face it; slapping an elastic waist belt over a fat coat can make us look like a hot dog!   But alas, this one is well proportioned and the faux fur collar balances the look with a touch of glamour.  Win!

Woo!  This Burberry coat is sexy!  Show up to your beau’s doorstep wearing absolutely nothing underneath and watch his jaw drop!  It’s effortlessly luxurious, plus the camel hue and trench silhouette gives this coat versatility.  It’s a piece that will last a lifetime.

I immediately imagine Kate Middleton wearing a coat like this.  It has royal simplicity.  The wool mix, grey tone, timeless cut, concealed closures and faux fur induces lofty elegance fit for a noble personality.

IF YOU HAVE AN APPLE SHAPE…

• Go For: Ruching down the center of your torso to create a long lean line and slenderize your middle.  Sleek fabrics and roomy silhouettes will skim over a fuller midline and leave plenty room at the center.  Vertical zipper detailing and linear open fronts will elongate your frame.
• Avoid: Belted coats, they accentuate rather than flatter your midsection.

Cozy!  Donna Karan’s charmingly chic marled knit coat flaunts a draped shawl collar, long sleeves, and black trim.  Glide it over crisp button downs and tailored trousers or even a cashmere turtleneck and dangerous leather leggings.  I also recommend infusing a vibrant clutch to add a pop of color against the knit texture.

I love to see edgy detailing on modest silhouettes.  This nude No.21 coat features black sequin at the cuff, a round neckline, concealed front closures, and an overall sleek form.  Team it with a pleated dress, slinky heels and minimal accessories – let the sequin do the shouting!

Eye-catching, on trend and slimming, this M Missoni reversible coat packs a lot of punch!  The navy and petrol blue vertical stripes, mod front closures and kimono-esque ¾ sleeves is a genius combination!  Partner it with a pencil skirt, booties and a fitted top, or rock it out with dark denim skinny jeans, a chiffon blouse and knee length leather boots.

WHY DOES THE SHAPE OF THIS DRESS WORK?

Looser dresses allow us to have more fun with prints and textures because the garment won’t cling to our bodies.  It’s billowy nature takes shape of it’s own, rather than calling attention to any ‘trouble spots.’

IF YOU WANT TO WEAR STRIPES…WHAT’S THE BEST WAY TO DO IT?

Keep in mind two key points: horizontal prints add width, vertical stripes add length.  Larger horizontal stripes need to have cooler tones because they naturally add width to your frame.  Darker tones minimize volume and the waist belt adds definition, which gives Shannon’s look harmony.

WHERE SHOULD THE TIE HIT YOU? WHY DO YOU WANT TO MAKE SURE IT’S HITTING YOU IN THE RIGHT SPOT?

For fitted looks the best place for belt is directly below the bust because that’s the smallest part of your torso.  However, when you are wearing a looser fitting dress the belt should also have more of a relaxed fit – like in this case.

WHAT SHOULD WOMEN KEEP IN MIND WHEN TRYING ANIMAL PRINT FOR THE FIRST TIME?

You want to wear classic cuts when trying the animal print trend.  They are naturally risqué, so we tame it’s fiery appeal with subtle silhouettes and colors, like this traditional pencil skirt and these conventional black separates.  We know pencil skirts are universally flattering, so teaming it with animal prints is a safe and flattering way to rock this trend.

Avoid pants with large prints, as they will exaggerate your lower half.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A PANT?

Pants with a high waist, slim fit at the hip and thighs with no pleating and a slight boot cut are most slenderizing because they offer control, support and weight at the hemline to balance your proportions.

WHAT FABRIC IS BEST TO STICK TO?

Fabrics with a spandex and cotton mix will conform to the shape of your body while providing the structure and support you need to feel comfortable and confident all day.

WHAT TYPES OF PRINTED PATTERNS SHOULD YOU AVOID?

If you are petite avoid large printed patterns as they have the tendency to overwhelm your body.  Smaller prints are always more figure-flattering than larger prints.

TELL US ABOUT WHAT LISA IS WEARING.

Structured, slightly fitted pencil skirts minimize thighs and raise your waistline to bring the attention away from your midsection and towards the narrowest part of your ribcage. This effect also adds a couple of inches to your lower half, which makes your legs look longer, and your overall body leaner.

HOW TO PICK OUT COLORS

Remember wearing a lighter color on top will also draw the eye upwards, and add a few precious inches to your frame.

SHOULD YOU STICK WITH DARK COLORS ON BOTTOM?

Dark colors on the bottom will minimize shapelier hips and thighs – sculpting your lower half.  Bright colors on top will add structure to your upper body and balance your proportions.  With all of these fashion tips there is one thing I want you to do today – give someone, no matter their shape or size a complement – you never know how much it can lift their spirt.  Kindness is always in style.

And when it comes to showing national pride athleticism is just as significant as fashion.  Symbolic colors, flag prints, uniforms with personality and savvy accessories are all apart of the mix.  What caught my attention most were the patriotic nail designs.   Feminine, subtle and cleverly crafted, nationalistic nails added glam to the sporty Olympics!

Hosted by new “The X Factor” judge Demi Lovato and “Glee” actor Kevin McHale, the show broke loose at the Gibson Amphitheater in Universal City, California where performers like No Doubt, Flo Rida and Justin Bieber performed before thousands of screaming fans. Drama series headliners in attendance included The Vampire Diaries actors Paul Wesley, Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder who were winners of the Choice Fantasy/Sci-Fi Show Award. Taylor Swift won her 20th trophy, the most ever won by a female artist. Bieber isn’t too far behind, having surfed away with 12 boards thus far.

And to top it off, Bieber’s girlfriend and teen sensation Selena Gomez celebrated her 20th birthday at the event with her adorers. They presented her with a decadent cake and sang ‘Happy Birthday’ at the theater. She was tickled pink!

The fashion front was just as impressive as the awards show. I’m eager for us to jump right into the best-dressed celebs at this year’s Teen Choice Awards!

Chris Brown burned up the stage with laser lights, strong vocals, body popping, feet kickin, back flips and brick muscles during his “Turn Up the Music” performance.

On a sentimental note, Mariah Carey caved into tears during her tribute to Whitney Houston.  But Monica and Brandy uplifted the crowd by singing spirit boosting Whitney Houston originals.

But who stole the BET 2012 Awards?  Beyonce did!  There was so much buzz surrounding whether or not she and Jay Z would attend all this week.  With Jay Z in the middle of a world tour, Beyoncé just wrapping up her Atlantic City performances and Baby Blue Ivy approaching 6 months on July 7, we weren’t certain if music’s royal couple would attend.  But alas, the two slid past the red carpet right into their front row cushions alongside Hollywood’s newest lovebirds Kim and Kanye!

Beyonce channeled an 80’s vibe with voluminous curls and a gorgeous canary yellow satin one-shoulder gown with an on trend sky-high slit by Stephane Rolland!  Her bejeweled waist-belt added the perfect amount of glam to complete the evening look.

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West were fashionably in tune with head-to–toe white.  Kim’s backless shealth dress featured edgy zipper detailing which, of course, she wasn’t afraid to flaunt.

To be brutally honest, the fashion front was mild overall.  However, Beyonce and Kim’s BET 2012 style gets an A+.  And, Nicki Minaj calmed down the theatrics, which is exactly what her fans wanted.  Go girls!!

It feels good to FINALLY trade in those fuzzy layers of cold weather apparel for a long awaited kiss from the sun. You should be glowing!

But if you haven’t worked up the nerve to slither in a summer dress you will be ready when we’re done with this conversation.

Whether you like boho chic styles like Nicole Richie or foxy and fitted like me, this season has a full range of styles to help you show off your toasty tan.

But before I go into details, right off the top let me tell you: the must have summer dress trend for 2012 are hi low dresses. The hemline is short in the front and long in the back. Fabrics are light and airy to dramatize the asymmetrical silhouette. Hi low dresses can vary in length, by either falling above or below the knee. And although they complement all body-types, women who are shorter should avoid hi low dresses that fall below the knee. Longer hemlines can make you appear shorter by visually chopping the length of your legs.

Necklines of hi low dresses vary from halter to crew and also V-neck. Stick to a neckline that usually complements your bust-line for flattering fit.

Overall, there are a plethora of dress styles for every personality, body-type and occasion this summer. Let’s have some fun and take a look at my top picks worn by Hollywood starlets just for you. Plus I’ve added tips on which styles to choose for your body-type.

Summer 2012 Dress Trend 1: Hi Low Dresses

Khloe Kardashian looks smashing in this multi-tone tribal print hi low dress and gold waist belt. Swapping a muted nude pump for strappy tangerine soles is a great way to play up a focal hue of the dress.

Blake Lively’s angelic hi low dress features a halter neckline, whimsical print and voluminous tiering, which are a trustworthy way to add curves. Skip the necklace when wearing a halter neckline; it’s strong enough by itself.

This easy, breezy hi low has a neutral palette that is easy to ornate with your newest accessories, like her orange Wayfarers, suede boots and studded waist belt.

You’ll always find something oversized on Nicole Richie, but this time it’s not the dress. Her hi low is one of my favorites yet! The vivid blue and lustrous fabric shouts contemporary goddess. Dark touches add a hint of cool.

Summer 2012 Dress Trend 2: Eye-Catching Cutouts

The Bachelorette star Ali Fedotowsky shines in an abstract print maxi dress with peek-a-boo cutouts. I’ve seen attention grabbing cut outs everyday for two weeks. They’re sexy without being flashy.

Krysten Ritter of ABC’s Breaking Bad captivates the paparazzi in this black midriff baring cut out dress and similar themed heels by ASOS.

Summer 2012 Dress Trend 3: Bold Maxi Dresses

Kourtney Kardashian wears the most diverse silhouettes of the sister trio. She’s wearing a one shoulder geometric print maxi dress and an equally striking necklace. Geometric prints are popping up everywhere.

This yellow and black tipped maxi dress has a jewel embellished neckline and figure flattering gathering around the waist. Denise Richards looks stunning!

Jessica Alba is wearing a blue AG Adriano Goldschmied maxi dress and yellow Theonne cardigan with an intricately designed cross body bag to add texture. Her yellow cardigan, strappy platform heels and fedora hat sharpen the look.

I am impressed how Kylie Minogue’s balances her ruffle tiered maxi dress and accessories. The dress, waist belt, purse and heels each have bulk, but the volume is swallowed by the waist belt and delicate neckline, which highlights her trim upper body. You can do this too! Smart styling!

If You’re Curvy:

This show stopping dress is smartly crafted. See the lines down the middle and sides of the dress; they’re an instant slimmer. The vertical line draws the eye up and down your body rather than across. This creates a long, lean visual impact. Look for these powerful design details when you want to appear more trim. It’s worth mentioning that the small waves add extra interest without creating mass.

Elizabeth Banks takes advantage of the same fashion trick with this gorgeous pocketed sheath. The orange, black and green vertical lines elongate her frame, and the black skinnies underneath extend the line. A thin waist belt keeps the look slender and perfectly prim.

Choose a monochromatic sheath like Eva Mendes that is semi-fitted to gently skim your curves and define your waist for an attractive fit you can rely on.

If You Have An Athletic Build:

Amber Heard knows what she’s doing. The flowy nature of the fabric as well as the strategic gathering at the neckline and waist add shape to her toned physique. Now you can make her secret work for you!

Katrina Bowden uses an all over floral pattern and an A-line skirt to contour her statuesque figure.

Stacy Keibler uses the same angle with this pedal printed dress. In addition, her flutter sleeve lends an even softer touch to her athletic build.

If You’re Pear Shaped:

Before the Christian Dior show in Paris, Jessica Alba smiles for the cameras in this pink and white strapless dress. If your hips are larger in comparison to your upper half wear fuller skirts to balance out your frame. Keep in mind strapless styles will pull the eye up toward your collarbone and away from your hips.

Eva Mendes’s peach pleated dress is another elegant example of how to conceal fuller hips. The shifty skirt and chiffon overlay temper full hips. A decorative neckline puts the focus where you want it to be.

If You’re Short:

If you are short keep dresses at or below the knee. Mailn Akerman’s Lacoste dress is a mod example of how to do it right. A boat neck balances out the shortness of the dress and the geometric print gives it a mature finish. I give it an A+

When you need an alternative to minis resort to a classic knee length sheath in a solid tone to create an uninterrupted line that elongates your body.

If You Have a Full Bust:

Choose semi-fitted styles with open necklines and nipped in waists like Christie Brinkley to add balance to your voluptuous assets.

Plunging necklines like Cat Deeley’s lengthen your upper body, which calms the bust-line.

If You Have a Small Bust

Strapless dresses, particularly with sweetheart necklines like Ali Larter’s, add definition to your bust-line, and ruching over the bust adds fullness. Adorable!

Hayden Panettiere uses a gathered layer over her bust-line to add fullness up top. You can do this too!

The 21-year-old Kentucky native is an Academy Award and Golden Globe-nominated actress seen in thousands of theaters as Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games, which is based on the first book in The Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins.

And if you’ve seen the movie you know she’s kick-ass, however she’s not your average Hollywood starlet…

Though confident enough to strip down in front of buddy Zoe Kravitz, Jennifer still has insecurities.  She told David Letterman, “I don’t know why everyone likes me.”  I’m still baffled!

She’s so smokin’ Star even reported that Brad Pitt has the hots for her.  Plus Jennifer’s fashion ranges from Oscar worthy to date night appropriate.  And after browsing photos to check out her style, I was impressed by how effortlessly she incorporates prints into her look.  And with my simple guide, broken down into three levels, you can too!

 Combination 1:  Beginner

Punch it Up with a Printed Dress 

Printed dresses pack a lot of power, that’s why they are so desirable!  There are two critical elements you want to consider to find the right printed dress for you.  First, examine the cut of the dress.  Don’t get distracted by the print.  Choose a dress with a cut that flatters your figure.  A classic shift dress like the violet and black Oscar de la Renta Jennifer is wearing above complements all body types.  Its scoop neck, knee length and also how it skims without clinging makes this dress universally flattering.

After you’ve chosen the right cut for your body, now it’s time to focus on the print.  Smaller and tightly configured prints are most wearable.  Large prints can be dangerous territory if you are shorter because they can overwhelm your frame.  You don’t want the print to appear bigger than you.  The print on the pink and green dress worn by Jennifer are indeed large, however, her statuesque figure can handle palette.

Remember, bold patterns require that you keep accessories to a minimum.  The pattern must take the show.  In addition, always define your curves.  The shape and amount of fabric of some dresses will require a waist belt for definition, others will not.  If the dress is loose like the pink and green a-line button up dress above wear a waist belt.  If the dress is fitted the choice is yours!

Combination 2: Experienced

Blend Prints with Colorful Solids

The magic in teaming prints with solids begins with moving out of the matchy-matchy comfort zone.  Play with color!  I like to call this the marriage of prints and solids.

As with all marriages, the couple has to be compatible.  Start with your print.  Find a solid color that will complement your print.  Stripes are easier to match because they are the combination of neutral tones, and neutrals can be paired with any color. Check out the photo of Jennifer wearing the solid red shorts and striped top by Marc Jacobs for a shoot with Teen Vogue.  She goes a step further by adding even more colors, an orange belt and powder blue wedges – that’s how easy stripes get along with other colors. They are compatible enough to marry almost any tone.

If you have a print other than stripes and are unsure of which solid color it should marry there is a solution.  Look at the colors already within your print.  Select a color other than a neutral, and let that be your solid color companion.  For example, if you have a printed top that is yellow, pink, green and brown, do not wear brown bottoms.  A fearless fashionista will opt for yellow, pink or green bottoms and steer clear of the neutral.

Mingle Prints with Prints

Pairing prints with prints can be as scary as a blind date; to win you‘ve gotta to dive in!  Follow your intuition.  There are certain prints you are naturally drawn to, just as with guys, so select only those.  Otherwise you’ll be dating the douche bag from junior year and wearing grandpa’s ugly sweater and red plaid pants.

Two distinctive prints must not only be stylish but they should also share at least one dominant color.  Or if there are two distinctive colors, like the photo directly above, they should complement each other.  Colors are complementary when they are opposite on the color wheel.  In the second to last photo where Jennifer is wearing the striped t-shirt by Rodebjer and 90s inspired patched jacket the common shade amongst the prints is blue.  In the final photo, the two prints work because their dominant colors are opposite on the color wheel.
